Invisalign v. Braces

Are Braces a Thing of the Past?

For many years, braces were the only option in order to correct orthodontic issues and achieve that perfect smile. When Invisalign hit the orthodontic scene in the 1990s, things changed.

Invisalign is the clear alternative to metal braces. These clear and removable aligners are a virtually invisible way to improve your smile without the drawbacks of wires, brackets, and limiting the foods you can eat that come with wearing braces. With the extremely advanced technology of Invisalign clear aligners, people often ask the question: Are braces a thing of the past?

According to Dr. Janet Stoess-Allen, orthodontist of Park Avenue Orthodontics on the Upper East Side of New York City, she believes we are headed in that direction. When asked about treating a patient with either Invisalign or braces, she explained that she prefers treating patients with Invisalign.

“I encourage them to use Invisalign clear aligners because what I have found is that I’m able to produce better results using Invisalign Clear Aligners than braces for many cases,” said Stoess-Allen.

An example of a case where Dr. Stoess-Allen finds Invisalign to be very successful is in those with anterior open bites. “Particularly people who have an anterior open bite where their teeth don’t touch in the front, I find that it’s just more effective,” Stoess-Allen explains.

Are there any other benefits to using Invisalign over braces? According to Dr. Stoess-Allen, the answer is yes.

She feels Invisalign is “just a better system, in my opinion, because of being able to brush your teeth, remove the aligners and keep them clean. With braces it’s difficult to clean around them, no matter how diligent you are.”
