Kick Off Your Summer Right by Starting Orthodontic Treatment
The school year is finally coming to an end and Summer 2019 is approaching us! While summer is the season for some much needed rest and relaxation, it is also the perfect time to start orthodontic treatment. If you’ve been putting off your first visit to an orthodontist, here are a few reasons why summer is a great season to start treatment!
During the school year, schedules get hectic and days are very busy! Both children and adults are booked constantly! In addition to catching those summer rays, starting orthodontic treatment in the summertime allows for a much more flexible schedule. According to Dr. Janet Stoess-Allen of Park Avenue Orthodontics in New York City, the summer is a great time to make an appointment with an orthodontist without the stress of a busy school year, especially here in NYC. “We find that the city calms down, many go away on vacations, and those who stay in the city can relax and enjoy the calm atmosphere that surrounds our orthodontic practice in the summer months,” explains Stoess-Allen. “We encourage patients to come in for a consultation to help them decide how it would best suit them to align their teeth.”
Great Time to Start Something New
Because the technology used in orthodontic treatment has made incredible strides over the years, treatment options have become much more comfortable and discreet than ever. This is especially true with options such as Invisalign. Summer is a great time to see if Invisalign is right for you. “Since we have more time to devote with less year round patients in the office, summer is a great time to get patients started using Invisalign clear aligners. Invisalign uses the most advanced technology in the world and with all of the new additions and improvements to the product, we are able to fix almost every single type of malocclusion,” says Stoess-Allen.
With any new appliance, there is an adjustment period. Starting treatment over the summer makes that adjustment period much easier on patients because there are less distractions preventing you from getting used to appliances, especially for kids and teens. “Most people find it easiest to get started in treatment in the summer when they don’t have some of the distractions that they are confronted with throughout other times of the year,” notes Dr. Stoess-Allen.
Getting treated with Invisalign makes for a very manageable adjustment period because they are so easy to get used to, but starting treatment during the summertime makes it even easier. “Invisalign clear aligners do not alter their lifestyle since they are virtually invisible and unobtrusive. They do not interfere with eating favorite foods since they are simply removed for meals,” Stoess-Allen explains. “And for teens who get started in the summer, by the time they return to school in the fall, they are accustomed to wearing the aligners and do not have to think about anything other than getting back together with their friends and starting back to school.”
Summers tend to be less busy. In New York City, many people go on vacation and teens go to summer camp. Because of this, patients starting orthodontic treatment in the summer can begin in a less busy environment and get the extra care they may need. “I always encourage patients to get started in the summer if they can so that when the crowds return to the city, they have been able to get started in a more relaxed atmosphere,” Stoess-Allen adds. “If it is treatment on a child or teen, they have ample time to get used to either using an appliance, braces or Invisalign prior to going back to school. And if it is an adult, summer is a great time to get started since many adults might need a bit of extra attention initially, and we have the time to devote to them.”
