Invisalign Frequently Asked Questions
What is the key factor in determining whether to use Invisalign or braces for a particular patient?
The key factor is always what’s best for the patient based on his or her unique issues. With all of the latest advanced technology with Invisalign, we are finding that most all orthodontic malocclusions can be effectively treated without having to use braces.
Should Invisalign or braces be used for patients with TMJ?
A patient with TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, generally responds best to Invisalign. The aligners place an immediate cushion between the teeth that acts as a buffer for the jaw joints.
What about patients with an open bite?
Patients with an open bite should typically be treated with Invisalign rather than braces due to the latest advanced technology used by Invisalign. Invisalign aligners individually control the movement of each tooth, such as intruding the back teeth and extruding the front teeth, all at the same time. We have found the results are better with Invisalign than with braces.
What if a patient has a deep overbite?
Invisalign aligners are best for a deep overbite, because they can be used in conjunction with bite ramps that are placed in the aligners to assist in opening the bite.
How can Invisalign help patients with a lower jaw that is too far back in relationship to the top jaw?
Until recently, these patients had to be treated with specialty auxiliary mandibular advancement appliances. It was a very slow process, and it was independent of braces treatment. Today, Invisalign aligners can be used to advance the lower jaw at the same time that the teeth are shifted into the desired position. This is a huge breakthrough in orthodontics and is best used for people who are still growing, up until approximately age 25.
What are the overall advantages of Invisalign over braces?
Invisalign is a much more exact science than braces. With braces, the dentist is in charge of placement. If their positioning is off by just a millimeter or two, the entire treatment plan can be affected. Aligners rely on 3-D scanning and digital modeling, so these discrepancies are extremely minimal. As long as the patient is compliant and wears the aligners as directed, excellent results should be achieved.
