The “clear alternative to braces” since the 1990s, Invisalign has exploded in popularity in recent years. Yet many people are unsure exactly what to expect from this thoroughly modern orthodontic treatment. Here are the top 10 questions and answers about Invisalign.

1. How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign starts with a 3-D digital model of your current smile. We will then morph the model to show you each phase of treatment, including the results. Dr. Stoess-Allen further customizes your treatment by using the 3-D controls on the software package to move your teeth herself. When she is happy with the model, Align Technology creates a series of customized, clear, comfortable, medical grade aligners. You will wear each set of aligners for one week, or as instructed, and then change to the next set at home.

2. What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign’s smooth, gentle aligners have no sharp edges to poke or cut your mouth and tongue. The virtually invisible aligners allow you to keep your treatment to yourself, and since they are removable, you can enjoy your favorite foods and perform your normal oral hygiene routine. We will see you just once every eight to twelve weeks to keep an eye on your progress.

3. Is Invisalign right for me?

Invisalign and braces both work well for most orthodontic problems, however, if treated by the right orthodontist who is specialized and accustomed to completing difficult cases, Invisalign is a fantastic option. Dr. Stoess-Allen is very accomplished at treating even the most difficult orthodontic cases using Invisalign.

4. I had braces, but then my teeth shifted again. Can Invisalign help?

It is not uncommon for teeth to shift years after braces are removed especially if you did not wear your retainers after treatment. If this happened to you, Invisalign can be an excellent way to correct the issue without undergoing another round of braces.

5. Can I use Invisalign if I have dental veneers?

Yes. We will assess your entire mouth with an eye towards which teeth need straightening and which have veneers and let you know how Invisalign can make the desired changes for you.

6. I have a dental bridge. Can I use Invisalign?

Even though a dental bridge connects more than one tooth together and we cannot move those teeth, we can use Invisalign to correct other orthodontic issues you may have. We will help you find the right solution for your individual needs after a thorough evaluation.

7. Can I eat, drink, smoke, and chew gum with Invisalign?

Since Invisalign is removable, you can take your aligners out to eat and chew gum. Small snacks that are not hard or sticky, as well as both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks that are clear, are fine with your aligners in. Just be sure to brush your teeth and clean your aligners as soon as possible. Smoking will not damage the aligners, but it could cause discoloration.

8. How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

Invisalign costs vary depending on exactly what your orthodontic problems are, as well as your geographic location. It is roughly the same price as braces, though, especially when you add adjustments, upgrades, and emergency visits to the base price of braces. In Dr. Stoess-Allen’s office, Invisalign’s transparent pricing model includes all aligners, photographs, and x-rays as well as retainers once treatment is completed. We also offer complimentary visits to patients after treatment to check their retainers periodically.

9. Is Invisalign covered by dental insurance?

Every insurance policy is unique. Some policies cover only braces, some cover both braces and Invisalign, and some do not cover orthodontics at all. You likely have an annual cap on benefits as well. Our helpful office staff will walk you through your coverage and out of pocket costs.

10. How can I pay for Invisalign?

We offer a discount for payment in full up front. We also accept most major credit cards. In addition, we offer zero-interest in-house financing with equal monthly installments. Our office staff will help you select the payment option that is best for you.
