The school year is over and summer is here! While summer may be a great time for people get in some much needed rest and relaxation, it is also the perfect time to start orthodontic treatment. If you’ve been putting off a much needed first visit to an orthodontist, here are a few reasons why summer is a wonderful season to finally start!
During the school year, schedules get crazy and it seems like there just aren’t enough hours in the day! Both children and adults have full schedules! In addition to getting some summer sun, starting orthodontic treatment allows for a much more flexible schedule. According to Dr. Janet Stoess-Allen of Park Avenue Orthodontics in New York City, the summer is a great time to make an appointment with an orthodontist without the stress of a busy school year. “In New York City the summers are typically a bit less hectic since many people tend to take summer vacations,” explains Stoess-Allen. “If someone is in the city over the summer and interested in getting started with orthodontic treatment, it is a great time to do just that. Even though we always try to give all of our patients our undivided attention, we are able to spend even more time devoted to them over the summer months simply because there are less people and less interferences.”
Easier Adjustment Period
Technology used in orthodontic treatment has made immense progress over the years. Treatment options have become much more comfortable and discreet than ever, especially with options such as Invisalign. However any new appliance comes with an adjustment period, such as minor aches and pains. Starting treatment in the summer makes that adjustment period much easier on patients because there are less distractions preventing you from getting used to appliances, especially for kids and teens. It gives patients more time to get acclimated to their braces or Invisalign, such as adjusting to eating softer foods with braces. With Invisalign clear aligners, it allows patients to get used to wearing these removable aligners the recommended 20-22 hours per day.
Summers tend to be less busy. In New York City, many people go on vacation when it gets warm. Because of this, patients starting orthodontic treatment in the summer can begin in a calm environment and get the extra TLC they may need. “I always encourage patients to get started in the summer if they can so that when the crowds return to the city, they have been able to get started in a more relaxed atmosphere,” Stoess-Allen adds. “If it is treatment on a child or teen, they have ample time to get used to either using an appliance, braces or Invisalign prior to going back to school. And if it is an adult, summer is a great time to get started since many adults might need a bit of extra attention initially, and we have the time to devote to them.”
While summer is a wonderful time for soaking up sun, it is also an excellent time to start getting treated by an orthodontist!
